Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1

Screen:
Sony XPERIA X1a:
The XPERIA uses a WVGA resolution for it’s 800×480 display, and while it’s absolutely gorgeous, we couldn’t help but feel as if it might be a little too big. The menu items are pretty small, and while it’s ok to use if you’re banging away on the soft key buttons on the front of the device, it’s kind of tricky to use your finger to select these most of the time. What we love about the XPERIA’s display is that there are no grainy artifacts, and the screen barely requires any pressure to register input. Not a bad thing, a good thing. But that might come down to personal preference.
AT&T HTC Fuze:
Ah, good ol’ VGA. The Fuze rocks out with a 640×480 display, and while it’s not as roomy as the Sony X1, it’s more than big enough to cram whatever you want into the screen. Most applications look great in this resolution, and hey, even Skyfire works! The only downside about the Fuze’s screen is that while it’s very, very nice, it’s a little grainy if you want to get nitpicky, and the pressure required to register a touch can get a little annoying.
Keyboard:
Sony XPERIA X1a:
The X1 makes use of a 3-row QWERTY keyboard (the fourth row being the spacebar, extra buttons like “OK”, etc). We said some pretty harsh words about it in our mini-review back in the day, but we’re actually loving the keyboard now. Our gripes were that the keys were a little too flush with the case, but it seems as if that has been cleared up now. The keyboard by no means protrudes, it’s still very flush, but it’s a lot better than the unit we toyed with previously and we have no problem banging out emails or IMs on here. The only complaint would probably have to be that there isn’t quite enough room to type 100% perfectly on the top row of keys. We would have loved a tiny bit more space in between the key and the front sliding mechanism, but once you get used to it, you’re pretty much good to go.
Final critique would have to be the backlighting. We understand the keys are metal and everything, but there is really no excuse. Once you have the layout sort of memorized you’ll make out alright, but the lighting is very dim unless you are in total darkness and it doesn’t even fully light up key like it should.
AT&T HTC Fuze:
The Fuze uses a 4-row QWERTY keyboard and is pretty much what you’d expect from HTC. The keys are not rubberized like they were on the Herald or Tilt, but they feel really good. There’s enough tactile feedback to minimize mistakes and the layout is near perfect. But there are a couple things that bug us, though… For starters, while we love AT&T for kicking the crap out of whoever designed the initial Touch Pro keyboard and making them add Start and OK buttons, there is also a negative. Instead of the numbers being at the top row of the device they are placed in a standard number pad format over the keys. That’s all well and fine, but what this did is push the letters to the side of the keys so they could fit the numbers in. If you’re not typing in perfect daylight this can kind of get annoying because when you go to hit a letter to type, you actually hit the very edge of the key and not the middle of it since the letters are pushed over. It’s not the end of the world, just a minor annoyance that we would have liked to be fixed. All in all, it’s a very good keyboard; one of the best keyboards on a Windows Mobile device
OS:
Sony XPERIA X1a:
While Sony doesn’t come close to offering anything like HTC’s TouchFLO 3D, they have made great use of something called “Panels.” There are about eight pre-loaded that range from the standard Windows Mobile homescreen, to a Google homescreen, to even a Facebook homescreen. The Facebook panel is straight up addicting. Like crack addicting. Really. Why do you think it took us so long to write this review? In addition to the aforementioned panels, there is also a music player panel, and customized homescreen ones where you can add in some RSS feeds and have them display right there. Very sneaky, very cool. Navigation on the XPERIA is just the regular Windows Mobile stuff, though, and Sony didn’t do much in terms of customizing the OS. For an expert WinMo user this is obviously not a problem, in fact, you might even prefer this, yet we can’t help but think how many additional sales Sony would have gotten if they had done a little more. Well, they probably would have got a lot more sales if the damn thing was shipping and wasn’t $800, so let’s not kid ourselves there.
AT&T HTC Fuze:
The Fuze uses HTC’s TouchFLO 3D which runs on top of the standard Windows Mobile junky OS. HTC has done wonders in this regard, and they don’t plan on stopping. If you’re not familiar with TouchFLO, you could sort of think it as a very complex skin, but the whole purpose of it is to minimize the actual user interaction with Windows Mobile as a whole. That’s a good thing, not a bad thing. You can always just rip into the regular Windows Mobile until your heart is content, but TouchFLO is the best Windows Mobile experience out there. In the OS department, where the Fuze differs from the X1, is that HTC has pretty much combed through everything to try and bring it up to snuff. You can’t polish a turn (well, you actually can) yet HTC has been able to deliver an amazing product that makes Windows Mobile far more usable. For instance, the soft keyboards. Instead of having to slide the phone open like the XPERIA to enter text (unless you want to use the atrocious standard Windows Mobile keyboard, or one of the other rudimentary text entry options), you can just quickly touch type and be on your way. For a longer typing engagement, just slide out the keyboard. This approach works wonders, and it’s actually one of the big complaints we had with the T-Mobile G1.
Battery:
The X1 makes use of a 1500mAh battery while the Fuze uses a 1350mAh battery. No question which one lasts longer, right? Well, not so fast. We’d say they are practically equal in terms of battery life, and if they aren’t exactly equal, the Fuze beats the X1 by a tiny bit. This as usual depends on your usage patterns, but we found both handsets lasting well into the late evening from an early morning full charge. If you’re a power user, you’ll want to pickup a second battery or car charger for either device.
Connectivity:
Both handsets are practically identical in this regard — quad-band GSM/EDGE, tri-band HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, IrDA, etc. We noticed that the Fuze holds onto a 3G signal a tad bit better than the X1 but this wasn’t really a concern as both units 99% of the time mirrored each other in the signal department, and both would hold onto low signals in fringe areas very well. The only part where we can see these two differing in the connectivity department would be Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi just plain sucks on the X1. We’re not sure why. It might be the placement of the Wi-Fi antenna, it might be the semi-metal casing — we’re just not sure. But even standing 5ft away from one of our wireless routers wouldn’t yield better than a 1-2 bar signal. Wi-Fi dropped every so often, and it just wasn’t a pleasant experience in general. The Fuze fared much better and we really don’t have anything to complain about there. At least in terms of connectivity.
Speed:
Hard specs on the X1a:
528MHz Qualcomm CPU
512/384MB ROM/RAM
=== Hard specs on the Fuze: ===
528MHz Qualcomm CPU
512/288MB ROM/RAM
As you can see, they are pretty much identical. But how do they fare in real world usage scenarios? It’s tough to compare them, but we’d say overall the Fuze is a tad bit more responsive and polished. Neither device has crashed on us so far, and that’s very impressive seeing as how we’ve put both through the ringer.
Sexiness:
Beauty is the eye of the beholder, right? This one’s going to be tough to judge as y’all probably have more than your own opinions (anyone ever looked at our comment sections before?), but if we had to give you our take, we’d say the X1 is simply the sexiest Windows Mobile device out there. That’s not an insult to HTC either, they built the thing. The Fuze is a little more understated from the front, but we love the diamond back, though some people would have preferred the flat one that didn’t pickup an ant’s fingerprints, we dig it.
The X1’s backside is a little too “Sonyish” for out tastes, it reeks of the P-series, and while that might not be a bad thing, it sort of takes away from the beautiful aspects of the phone. The triangle front navigation keys, the sexy-crafted angled aluminum keyboard, and the very sleek polished aluminum bezel around the handset.
The Fuze isn’t an ugly duckling, and the all polished device really looks professional yet sexy. The all black theme works wonders for it as well. And while the casing is metal on the Fuze, we’d have to go with chrome/polished aluminum over gun-metal glossy black. But hey, we’re just speaking for us. Go on with your bad self and lust over whichever device you want to!
Navigation:
Sony XPERIA X1a:
The X1 uses the beloved (at least by us) optical joystick. You won’t see an onscreen cursor here, but you will be able to do pretty much all your navigating with the optical joystick. Some nice tweaks by Sony (or HTC, we might add) include using the optical joystick to scroll in the browser in a page up / page down mode instead of selecting individual items. This works great because you can scroll to wherever you want to go, and then when you need to actually select something, hit the up/down/left/right key and select with the optical joystick (yes, it’s a real button also, that pushes in). There are no arrow keys on the keyboard however, and at first this is pretty annoying. Once you get used to navigating with the optical joystick though, it’s really no problem. You just keep one hand on the joystick instead of on the non-existent arrow keys on the keyboard.
AT&T HTC Fuze:
Out of the box, the Fuze offers a 5-way directional pad with a circular touch wheel. The problem is that the touch wheel doesn’t really do anything besides zoom in and out in Opera, or increase text size in emails, and so on. To get it to work like a scroll wheel, you have to hit up XDA and get your freak on. That’s fine with us, but for the average user that just buys a phone and keeps it stock, that won’t work so well.
Touch:
Sony XPERIA X1a:
The X1’s screen, like we said before, requires a much lighter touch to register touch input and this is really preferred in this neck of the woods. You get very fluid touch movements that are easy to control. This makes it more prone to user error if you aren’t careful, but once you get used to the thresholds, it’s very nice to use. The X1 does use a form of TouchFLO for scrolling, so you can simply swipe in any directions and phone will continue that touch interaction for you. One of the negatives about the touch screen really doesn’t have to do with the touch screen at all, rather how it’s placed. The screen isn’t flush with the casing, and while it doesn’t make or break the phone, it does make it a little annoying when you can’t seem to hit the start menu or “X” button just right because it’s sunk in the corner of case.
AT&T HTC Fuze:
HTC’s Fuze requires a stronger touch to register input, and while it’s cool that you can get away with lightly touching the screen to wipe it clean, or not accidentally hitting buttons while you are talking on the phone, we think it requires a little too much force. We’ve begged HTC to integrate capacitive touch screens into their Windows Mobile phones, and while that might be a pipe dream (there’s too many damn tiny check boxes in the OS to make a capacitive screen effective at this point), the touch should require so much… touch. The good news is that HTC’s screen is flush with the front panel and this makes our problems with the X1 seem like much bigger problems — the layout is great here on the Fuze.
Conclusion:
At the end of the day, what phone is better? That’s the ultimate question isn’t it? I personally crowned the AT&T Fuze as the best Windows Mobile device out there. Am I sticking to it? More or less, yes. Here’s why… The XPERIA X1 is a fantastic Windows Mobile phone. But the more we use it and evaluate it, the more we think its target market shrinks. Not so much because the device is sub-par, it’s quite the opposite. It’s just that we feel the only consumers interested in the X1 will be prior Windows Mobile users that know what they are doing and know how to handle the shortcomings in WinMo. Then there’s the $800 price tag which will certainly push a huge segment of the target market away. Like real, real fast. Looking at both of them from a consumer’s perspective, there really isn’t any reason to not go with the Fuze. Even if you’re not on AT&T, paying $500 for an unlocked unit is still better than paying $800.
The Fuze offers a much more complete experience than the X1, and that combined with the price really makes this a winner. If we eliminated price altogether, which one would we choose? That’s really tough, folks. The fact is we’d be happy with either one of them, but at this point we’d probably just go ahead and choose the Fuze. It’s much more streamlined, the entire OS is cohesive in terms of what HTC has done (everything from the volume up/down screen, to the Connection Manager, to TouchFLO, to well, you get the point) and it’s just an all-around more usable phone out of the box. If you want to man up and get your hands dirty with customizing the X1 and making it suit your needs better, more power to you. We’ve pretty much raped this handset and got it up to snuff, we just don’t think that many people want to be bothered with doing that. Not with Android, Symbian, BlackBerry and the iPhone around.

Skip if these minor improvements aside, the second-generation iPod touch hardware in general has not changed, the first generation and second generation of the same size are 110 x 61.8 x 8.5 mm, as are 3.5-inch glass firefly screen, headphone jack, Dock used to transfer data ports, sleep button and home button (Home), is the same.

Blackberry Pearl 8100

Currently it's available only from a few carriers, including T-Mobile USA, but I expect it to be much more widely distributed in short order.
Design
There's no doubt about it, the Pearl is tiny. It's one of the smallest smartphones I've ever used. It makes RIM's typical devices look positively gargantuan in comparison. If you love your BlackBerry but would like something smaller, this might be the way to go.
However, there is a major trade-off. Instead of having a regular QWERTY keyboard, the Pearl uses RIM's SureType system, in which each key handles two letters. I'll talk more about SureType later.
That's really the only drawback, though. This model offers all kinds of features no BlackBerry ever has before.
One of the most significant of these is a trackball. Instead of using a D-pad like virtually every over handheld and smartphone, you move around and select things on the Pearl's screen with a small roller-ball. RIM's implementation of this is well done, and I found it very easy to use. I'm not sure it's superior to a D-pad, but it's at least as good, and it's definitely better than just a scroll-wheel..
Aside from its keyboard, the Pearl is well supplied with additional buttons. On both the left and right side are what's called "Convenience Keys." By default the one on the left side lets you do voice dialing, while the one on the right opens the camera application, but these can be changed to whatever applications you prefer.
Also on the right side are a pair of buttons to increase or decrease call volume.
On the left side of the Pearl is the headphone socket and the device's mini-USB port. I'm not happy about the location of either one of these. If you're carrying this smartphone in your pocket with the headphones plugged in, you really want the socket to be on the top of the device. And the fact that the Pearl's mini-USB port is on its side means that no company is going to be able to create a cradle for it.
SureType
One of the biggest adjustments long-time BlackBerry users are going to have to make if they switch to a Pearl is getting used to the SureType system.
This has been created to let RIM squeeze a keyboard into a device as small as this one. To accomplish this, each key has to do double- or even triple-duty.
Here's how it works. To type the word "cat" you hit the C-V key, then the A-S key, then the T-Y key. The Pearl will then display a list of possible words that can be spelled with that key combination.
I know this sounds incredibly cumbersome, but really it isn't. At the end of every word you don't have to manually pick one of the options if the first option is the correct one, and SureType does an amazingly good job of picking the correct one. So all you have to do is type along and let your smartphone take care of the job of ensuring that what you meant to type is really what shows up on the screen.
If you're trying out a Pearl, the best advice I can give you is don't get frustrated in 5 minutes and give up. It's going to take a bit of practice to get comfortable with the new system.
As good as SureType is, it can only partially make up for the fact that the Pearl's keyboard is more than a bit cramped. This is an inevitable side-effect of using such a small smartphone, but it makes typing less than ideal.
Whether it's the keyboard or SureType, I find that typing the same sentence on the Pearl takes about 30 percent longer than it does on a smartphone with a regular QWERTY keyboard.
Trackball
If you're a long-term BlackBerry user, you should be very familiar with the scroll-wheel, the little gizmo on the side of your device you use to move around on the screen. The Pearl drops this in favor of a much more flexible trackball.
This allows you to move up and down, left and right, with just small movements of your thumb. This makes selecting items much quicker.
And, in my opinion anyway, putting my thumb on the front of a device this small to move a trackball is more comfortable than putting my thumb on the side of the device to use a scroll-wheel.
And the fact that the whole thing glows in low-light situations is a nice touch, too.
It's important that the trackball be easy to use, as the Pearl doesn't have a touchscreen. The only way to select different words or icons on the screen is with the trackball.
Multimedia
Easily the most significant new feature in the Pearl is its support for playing audio and video, something no BlackBerry has ever been able to do before.
Audio - I'm perfectly satisfied with the audio player on the Pearl. It can play music in the background and pretty much do everything I want an MP3 player to do.
Video - I had a less positive experience with the Pearl's video player. No surprise, it easily handled the small AVI file that came pre-installed on the smartphone, so I threw a 71 MB MPEG-4 video at it. It choked. It choked badly. The audio skipped every few seconds and, within a minute, the audio was several seconds behind the video. Before someone says this was an unfair test, I play similar videos on Palm OS and Windows Media devices regularly without a hitch.
This device comes with a pair of headphones for use with both music and video.
Images - The Pearl allows you to store a bunch of images and display them. This smartphone's screen isn't very large so you're not going to be making any serious slideshow presentations from it, but the application RIM has written to handle this job works well. It didn't choke on a 2.3 MB JPEG, and it lets you pan and zoom.
Ringtones - I have to admit, I have no interest in ringtones, but I know plenty of other people like them, so I'll point out that this smartphone supports polyphonic, MP3, and MIDI ones.
To take advantage of the multimedia capabilities of the Pearl, you're really going to need to get a microSD card, as you can only store images and ringtones in this device's internal memory.
Camera
The last really important new feature in this device is its 1.3 megapixel camera, a feature that's become pretty much a requirement for smartphones.
The Pearl's is fairly average, which means it's good enough to take casual pictures, but don't expect these to be really high quality.
Sorry, I don't mean to sound so critical. I really like having a camera with me all the time. It's great in those situations where your child/pet/drunk friend is doing something funny and you want to take a picture before the moment has passed.
The Pearl is one of the few cameraphones with a built-in flash, but this isn't very bright. The picture on the right was taken in near complete darkness with it and you can see that it didn't do a very good job of lighting up my subject.
On the other hand, this camera does a nice job of adapting to relatively low-light situations without the flash. There's only one light on in this room when I took this picture, but I think it looks fairly good, if a bit grainy.
Even more useless than the flash, though, is the digital zoom. I can't tell that it's enlarging anything, just cropping the picture smaller. Here's an example. What I asked for was a 640-by-480-pixel image at 5x zoom, what I got was a 240-by-192-pixel, rather blurry, image.
Surprisingly, the Pearl's camera is missing an important feature: video support. It can take still images but not record movies.
Email and Messaging
RIM made its reputation on "push" email, and of course the Pearl offers this.
If you don't understand what all the hoopla is about, RIM has a system that immediately sends each email to a BlackBerry handheld or smartphone as soon as it arrives on the mail server. This means that there's little or no delay between a message being sent and it arriving on the mobile device.
For this to work, though, your company has to either have a BlackBerry Enterprise Server set up, or you need to subscribe to the BlackBerry service through your carrier. Fortunately, most carriers offer this, and certainly any one that is selling the Pearl does, including T-Mobile USA.
But keep in mind, RIM isn't the only company offering push email anymore. Several others do, most notably Microsoft.
The Pearl has other messaging options beyond email. It supports SMS, which means you can send short messages to other mobile phones.
However, when I sent a message with an image attached -- that I though was an MMS message -- all that arrived was a note with a web address and instructions to log onto a T-Mobile site to see the picture.
Microsoft Office
One important area RIM has not made any significant progress in is allowing users to work with Microsoft Office documents.
For the past few years, BlackBerries have been able to view Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Acrobat documents that come in as email attachments, and the Pearl can do that too. But that's as far as it goes.
You can't load documents onto a folder on this device and view them later. You also can't edit them.
What you can do is see the contents of these files, without much formatting. Essentially, if someone sends you an important document, you'll be able to read it, but that's all.
There are a couple of exceptions. The image that was embedded in my Word document came through fine. And I could see the actual slides on one of the PowerPoint documents that I tested, but for some reason I couldn't do this with the other.
You can also see images that come in as attachments. And, alone of all the attachment types I tried, you can save images to your device.
As far as support for attachments goes, the Pearl does better than Windows Mobile Smartphone, which has no support for opening Microsoft Office documents without a third-party application, but it's behind both Pocket PC Phone and Palm OS devices, which allow both opening and editing of these files.
PIM
Like all good smartphones, the Pearl comes with with a suite of Personal Information Management (PIM) applications. That's a fancy way of saying that it includes an address book, calendar, and to-do list.
These are pretty good applications. For example, you can add a picture to an address book entry, which is becoming a pretty common feature these days, but you can also have the Pearl automatically display a contact's address on a map, which is something very few devices offer right out of the box.
The calendar handles re-occurring events, and you can edit one member of a series of events without having to change them all. You can also hit a "snooze" button when alarms go off so you can be re-reminded of them later.
You have a couple of options for synchronizing the PIM applications. If your company uses the BlackBerry Enterprise Server you can, of course, wirelessly synchronize your Pearl with that. If your company uses Microsoft Outlook, you can synchronize with that application, too.
Browser
This BlackBerry comes with a fairly decent web browser. It's not the best one around, but it's functional.
It does a good job of taking regular web pages and reformatting them for the Pearl's 240-by-260-pixel screen. What irritates me about it is that's its only display option. There's no way to have it display pages in their original wide formatting and scroll around on them.
Still, it has just about everything else I expect in a mobile browser.
This is probably the application where the Pearl's support for EDGE comes most in handy. This isn't the fastest cellular-wireless networking standard around by a long shot, but it's good enough for light web browsing, at least in my book.
You'll also be glad to know that the Pearl supports multi-tasking, so you can tell it to open a big page, then go off and do something else while it's downloading. Invoking this is more than a bit clumsy, though. By default, leaving an application closes it. You have to open a drop-down box of options and choose "Switch Applications" to keep one open while you use another.
File Management
An application that I wish came with this smartphone is a file browser. As it is, if you want to see a list of the photos you have stored on your Pearl, you have to open the photo viewer. The same is true of music files, and so on.
This device requires you to put each types of file in a specific folder. Yeah, you can put an image in the Videos folder, but the image viewer won't be able to find or display it.
Fortunately, it supports sub-folders, so you can organize your files.
The BlackBerry Desktop Manager--a PC application that handles the interaction between your smartphone and your PC--includes a component called Media Manager that lets you move music, pictures, ringtones, and videos onto your device or back onto your PC.
But you don't have to have this installed on a PC in order to be able to move files around. One of my favorite features on the Pearl is its support for mass storage mode. Plug it into the USB port on any computer (Mac or Windows), and it appears as a removable drive. You can then copy files back and forth. (You can also recharge the device this way, albeit somewhat slowly.)
Phone
For all of this smartphone's functionality, let's not forget that this is, at heart, a phone. And it's a pretty good one.
You have several options for making voice calls. Naturally, you can use the Pearl like any phone and hold it to your ear. You can also put it into speakerphone mode if you want to have several people talk at once. Or you can use a wired or wireless headset (more about this later).
Looking up phone numbers is a breeze. From the main screen all you have to do is start typing a name and this smartphone will pull up a list of people in your address book that you can choose from.
You can also call people with Voice Commends. All you have to do is push a button on the side of the Pearl, wait for the prompt, and say the name of the person you want to call. This is incredibly convenient when driving.
Bluetooth
The model offers Bluetooth, which lets you wirelessly connect to a variety of accessories.
Far and away the most common of these is a headset, and there are a ton of Bluetooth headsets on the market. If you get one, you'll be able to talk on your phone while your device is still in your pocket. Most of these even let you answer the phone without touching your Pearl at all.
Of course, you don't have to buy a wireless headset. The Pearl comes with a wired one
Conclusion
There's no doubt about it, the Pearl is a huge step forward for RIM. This smartphone offers features that many current and potential BlackBerry users have been wanting for years.
But, for all its progress, I think this company still has a ways to go. Its implementation of some of the new multimedia features in the Pearl is a bit clumsy and are in real need of polish. And it still lacks features business users want, like better and easier access to Microsoft Office files.
At the same time, the feature that was RIM's biggest advantage for many years--push email--is available now on many other devices.
All in all, I think this is a decent smartphone, and certainly better RIM's first one, the BlackBerry 7100 series. But it still needs some work if it's going to stand up to the competition.

My Experience
Previously, I had never really successful installation of Windows Vista. There are always issues that arise which may cause the installation process or the results of the installation does not run well. The first time I install Windows Vista using the DVD rental and lending of the results can not login with the occurrence of the dialog box that states that Windows Vista is installed I have expired and need to do the activation.
After a while using a Hackintosh, appear longing to hold and try-try Windows again. Because since the engine Hackintosh as day-to-day, knowledge of Windows I fade the longer the more time and eaten by all the convenience offered by Hackintosh.
And as they often still use for some purposes, the installation and maintenance of Windows XP that does not become too difficult. But for Windows Vista I really have not found the chemistry, I can click and then achieve success. Installing Windows Vista both me even worse than the first.
Of all the coverage of Windows Vista, Windows Vista Ultimate Service Pack 1 is installed to give me good results and smooth during use, including posting to type this. Unfortunately the graphics card I use only graphics card on-board that I can not feel the sensation Aero view a-la Windows Vista.
